Masterton-Le Gra Vineyard

Le Gra Vineyard

What a great choice this was to stay at this POP (Park over Property) the Le Gra Vineyard in Masterton. The hosts and owners of this Vineyard are Brian and Nicky and their charming daughter, Orlaith.

This small boutique vineyard produces 6 grape varieties and we got to sample at a tasting one night. The award winning Pinot Noir and Merlot were my favourites while Robyn loved the Pinot Gris.

Owner Brian Geary

Brian presented the Le Gra range to us and two other couples, Maddie and Joe and Geoff and Anne. Brian’s story of how they came to be at this vineyard and his wine making was very refreshing and we had some laughs and learnt heaps. This was quite a different tasting to a scripted one from some of the larger Vineyards. Rather than tell us what we should taste in each wine(which is so different for each person) he asked each of us what we got from the wine.

Robyn and I stayed 4 nights at the Vineyard as we loved being around this family. Nicky was busy making platters for the customers while Brian was doing the tastings.

The donation box to Starship for staying on the vineyard is a heart-felt story for this donation. Have Nicky or Brian share their story.

Heading North to Karamea Leaving Westport for Karamea takes you on the only road north along the coast initially. We stopped half way on this journey at the Gentle Annie’s Campground. If you have not stayed here you will miss
