Opotiki-Motu cycle trails and Driftwood creatures

Staying at the Opotiki NZMCA site for two nights allowed us the option of doing the Dunes Cycle trail which begins just 2 min from the campground. However, the weather was not great so we did it from Tirohanga Beach.

There is only water at the NZMCA big site for many Caravans and Motorhomes. 3x buses, 1x 5th wheeler, 2x caravans and us.

We said goodbye to Marilyn, Tony, Linda and Alan having shared stories and reminisce about high school days-Ha.

Loved your stories too Kevin and Megan.

We moved onto the Tirohanga Beach Holiday Park for 4 nights. What a great campground it is. All facitiies available including  dumpsite. We cycled from there back to Opotiki 6klmm away on the Dune Trail. Nice coffee in Opotiki then cycled back to the Campground again.(15.5klm return including going for coffee)

Island view Holiday Park

On our way to the East Cape we stopped off at the wonderful Island View Holiday Park on the beach. The Balinese theme is a delight and some pics show you the toilets and showers we used. Great to meet Sandy and Greg and hear their adventures in NZ and Australia.

Access to the beach is only metres away. Fletcher the dog loved doing “zoomies” in the sand and then darting off to the water for a quick dip.

DRIFTWOOD CREATURES

The beach just metres away from the Island View Holiday Park was a graveyard for driftwood of all shapes. I loved to fossic through these logs and pieces of sun drenched and sea cleaned wood shapes. “What can you see in these shapes?” It was fun imagining the creatures depicted in the driftwood. “Let me know what you saw in these shapes?”

OMINOUS CLOUDS OVER OPOTIKI

Wow, what scary clouds over Opotiki the last couple of days (March 26th 2022) Howling winds too. What weather will this bring I wonder?

Love the photos and journal, DIDN’T discover this REGISTRATION until now. Looking forward to the journey. Driftwood from your local haunts is always a joy…I used to walk along Charcoal bay most days when living in Beachhaven…always see something different, or see the same things an a new way. When you get nearer to Hokitika, check When/if they have the driftwood and sand event on. Happy trails.
