If you have not done the Hauraki Rail Trail-put it on your bucket list to cycle all the trail or part of it like we did. We stayed at the Goldfields Railway Station Campground adjacent to the Railway.Station in Waihi town. Thank you Dave and Trish and Bentley, Brenda and Alan for teaching us Mexican Train.
We organized for Des at Adventure Bike Hire to shuttle us and our E-Bikes to Paeroa early one morning and we cycled from there back to the Waihi Railway campground. This is an easy 24klm ride featuring the 1100m tunnel used in the Gold rush days.
The Waihi Goldfields Railway runs a train from Waihi to Waikino and back 3 times a day. If you get tired on your cycle back from Paeroa, (and after you have been through the tunnel) you can hop on a purpose build carnage on the train at Waikino to take you back to Waihi. While at Waikino you should try the Hot Raspberry Tart with your coffee from the Waikino Station cafe.

Ti Tree Cafe

While in Waihi, try the Ti Tree Cafe. The coffee, food and staff there are great and the garden area outside is a pleasure after a 4klm ride around the Goldmine rim.
