Wentworth Valley DOC Campsite

Just 8klm from Whangamata township is Wentworth Valley where there is a large DOC campsite.

We arrived on January 20th to stay two nights. The access was a first for us having to negotiate our 8.3m Motorhome a across a Ford in the small river. Once checked in ($15pp for unpowered site) there was lots of areas cleared in the bush to erect your tent, Caravan or RV. There were lots of children here enjoying the last of the school holidays with their family. What a great playground it is for kids to explore the bush, walk to the many swimming holes in the river and look for the old Gold mines.

In the 1850’s this area was alive with Gold claims and there is evidence of these diggings on the walk to the Waterfall.

Our campsite

The campsite has created Alcoves for campers to pitch their tents or RV making it great for families. The squeals of delight from Children exploring the bush or swinging on a tree swing is great to hear. Thank you Wayne and Haley for your knowledge of this type of camping

Heading North to Karamea Leaving Westport for Karamea takes you on the only road north along the coast initially. We stopped half way on this journey at the Gentle Annie’s Campground. If you have not stayed here you will miss
