We loved exploring Whakatane and the many facets of this region.
Staying at the Whakatane Campground operated by the City council, allowed us to use the walkway/cycle way on top of the stop-bank that separates the river and Salt marches from the Campground. We cycled to town to shop and for a coffee fix, then cycled away from town under the bridge until the cycle-way finished. Met Debbie and Tony for a catch up and fish and Chips Gimbles.
We moved to a POP (park over property) at the Whakatane Golf Club for two nights. The Golf Club have an area opposite the course for about 10 caravans and Motorhomes. These are powered sites and there is water available. The small cost to stay allows you to use the Club showers and toilets as well as have a meal there.
Just down the road is the Whakatane Airport and there are two more POP’s on Aerodrome road.
We moved down Aerodrome Road close to the Airport to Bill and Annette’s home. A former nursery, the back paddocks are flat, bore water on site and the use of their vegetable garden. Loved the gift of pumpkins thanks Bill and Annette.
We said goodbye to Alan and Anne who in the Silverline Caravan have been on the road full time for 8 years!
Awakeri Rail Adventures
Thank you Paul for a great experience on the railway, the history lesson, the feeding of the chooks on the way, the great bush walk, the ‘cuppa’ in the bush and of course the Gumboot Fence and mystery poet. Robyn loved being the driver of our buggy while I photographed.
Here is the link to Awareki Rail Adventures to book your adventure with Paul.
